Boulder, Colo. - The University of Colorado Student Union and the Student Worker Alliance Program at the University of Colorado-Boulder is sponsoring an informational session and film screening in support of the DREAM Act on Wednesday, Sept. 23 in the UMC.
The event is in partnership with the United We Dream Network, a national volunteer-led network of undocumented youth and their allies, who support the DREAM Act. The act is an education access bill that would create a path to citizenship for undocumented young people.
The will answer questions related to this issue and the event is expected to draw students from all over the CU campus. Student leaders from UCSU hope that students can walk away from this event knowing about the issues surrounding this topic.
"UCSU wants to make sure people understand that this problem exists and that it is about equal access to an education, not immigration," Hailee Koehler, Co-Director of Legislative Affairs for the UCSU, said. "We have made it our mission this year to work at promoting access and affordability to higher education for everyone. Who are we to say who gets a shot at bettering themselves through an education and who does not?"
The day's events will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday at the UMC and will include:
-Informational tables
-Movie screening of the movie "Underground Undergrads"
-University of Colorado Student Union staff and the Student Worker Alliance Program members to answer any questions
-As well as petitions for students to sign in support of the DREAM Act
Each year more than 65,000 undocumented students graduate from this nation's high schools but, because they lack immigration status, these students face uncertain futures when it comes to attending higher education institutions.
College students from all across the United States will hold simultaneous actions in support of the DREAM Act.
